HEC Montréal conferred an honorary PhD on Jean Chagnon, former CEO of Lallemand Inc., a family business run by the third generation.

Lallemand Inc. is a family-owned Montréal company specializing in the development, production and marketing of yeast, bacteria and specialty ingredients. Founded at the end of the 19th century by an immigrant from Alsace, Fred “Lallemand”, the company was bought by Roland Chagnon in 1952. After three generations, it is still owned and managed by the Chagnon family. Indeed, in 2015, after 34 years at the head of the company as CEO, Jean Chagnon passed the torch successfully to his son Antoine. On November 19, under the recommendation of HEC Montréal, Jean Chagnon received an honorary PhD from the Université de Montréal. His outstanding leadership qualities allowed him to lead his family business to new heights. Today, Lallemand has more than 3,700 employees in 45 countries and five continents, eleven business units, including nine research and development centers.
