Conception navale FMP, a fast-growing family business in the Gaspé Peninsula, has just designed its first hybrid lobster boat!

The Gaspesian family business Conception navale FMP specializes in the manufacturing, modification and major repair of fishing boats such as lobster boats, crab boats, shrimp boats and tug boats, not to mention the sale of boat parts. Founded in Newport in 2017 by Francis Parisé (father) and his sons Mathew and Francis, the family-owned company offers its services to fishermen, tugboats and boaters from coast to coast. Prior to the creation of Conception navale FMP, the Parisé family owned a welding shop located in Port-Daniel where they did boat maintenance. With over 40 years of experience in the fishing industry, the Parisé family has distinguished itself by offering solutions and high-performance vessels adapted to the needs of fishermen. The new SME is extremely successful, having already completed three major conversions of fishing boats and the construction of six boats in its yard. To meet the growing demand, the company had to expand its facilities with a second production workshop in 2020. In addition, the company, which has about 30 employees, has just designed its first hybrid lobster boat. This lobster boat, 36 feet long and 12 feet wide, will be a small inshore boat powered by a gasoline engine, with an electric motor hooked up next to it. Entirely designed by Patrick Fortier-Denis, the SME’s marine engineer with three collaborators, this system will allow for energy efficiency gains. It also promises to improve the working conditions of the fishermen who will be able to bring up their lobster traps in the silence of the open sea thanks to the electric motor. In addition to its lightness, durability and recyclability, the innovative aluminum hull structure was designed to reduce assembly time. Supported by the Quebec government, the first hybrid-powered aluminum lobster boat is expected to be delivered this spring. This prototype should be able to confirm the technical feasibility while demonstrating the advantages of hybridization of the small fishing boat fleet in Quebec. A great market in prospect for our Gaspesian family shipyard!
