Canadian family-owned McCain Foods Ltd., the world’s largest manufacturer of frozen potatoes, is going sustainable!

McCain Foods Ltd. is a company with family roots firmly planted in the soil. Its history began in 1957 when the four McCain brothers, Wallace, Harrison, Robert and Andrew, took over the family farm in Florenceville, New Brunswick, which had previously been operated by three generations of McCains. With an innovative spirit and entrepreneurial drive, the McCain brothers expanded the family farm into food processing and distribution. The family’s knowledge of agriculture and the use of frozen food technology allowed Wallace and Harrison to grow their business into the largest manufacturer of specialty frozen potato products in the world. Today, while the McCain family is still the majority shareholder and several family members are members of the board of directors, McCain Foods Ltd. has 51 plants on six continents and more than 22,000 employees. Most recently, the company, which is a platinum winner of Canada’s Best Managed Companies, announced in its recent sustainability summary report that it will deploy regenerative agricultural practices in its 149,733 hectares of farmland by 2030. To improve its climate footprint, the family-owned company aims to halve its CO2 emissions, ban the use of coal, leverage renewable electricity and improve water use efficiency in water-stressed regions, among other things. The first “Farm of the Future” is already in operation in Florenceville, while two more sustainable farms of the same type will be inaugurated by 2025.
